What is the difference between a breast reduction and a breast lift?

A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to make the breasts smaller and lighter. A breast lift, on the other hand, reshapes and repositions your existing breast tissue—only minimal amounts of breast tissue is removed during a breast lift, and typically only done so to ensure symmetrical results between both breasts.

Who is a good candidate for a combined breast reduction and lift?

You may be a great candidate if you experience:

  • Chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts
  • Skin irritation or rashes beneath your breasts
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit properly
  • Breast sagging or drooping (ptosis) due to size, aging, pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Emotional distress about the size and appearance of your breasts

During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your medical history, lifestyle, and goals to determine if this combined procedure is the best approach to bring your aesthetic vision to life.

“Breast lift: Feb/2024. A 5 star review does not give Dr Duplechain and his team the credit they deserve… I could not have asked for a more beautiful result. Dr. Duplechain is truly in a league of his own. I could not imagine my results being as perfect as they are.  My only regret is that I did not do this procedure 10-15 years ago. It has been truly life changing for my appearance and health.”

How is a breast reduction with lift performed?

The procedure typically involves the following steps:

1. Incisions:

Your surgeon will use incisions that allow for both size reduction and lifting. Common options include:

  • An anchor incision circles around the areola, extends down to the breast crease, and goes along the crease at the base of the breast to resemble the outline of an anchor.
  • A lollipop incision circles around the areola and extends down to the breast crease, resembling the outline of a lollipop.

2. Tissue Removal

The ideal amount of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin is removed to achieve the desired size and symmetry.

3. Reshaping and Lifting

Once the ideal amount of tissue is removed, your surgeon reshapes the remaining tissue so that both breasts are as even as possible and have a beautifully natural look and feel. Typically, the nipple-areolar complex (the nipple and the pigmented tissue sound it) is refined and placed in the center of the breast mound for a perkier, youthful look.

4. Closure

The incisions are closed with sutures, and the breasts are carefully bandaged to support healing.

How small can I go with a breast reduction and lift?

Your post-surgery size depends on your anatomy, personal preferences, and your surgeon’s recommendations. While many patients aim for a proportional size that alleviates physical discomfort, others may choose a smaller size for a more dramatic transformation.

During your consultation, Dr. Duplechain or Dr. Ishee will discuss the safest and most aesthetically pleasing options based on your body frame, existing breast tissue, and skin elasticity.

What is recovery like after a breast reduction and lift?

Most of our patients can return to non-strenuous daily activities within 1-2 weeks of their surgery. However, you’ll need to avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least 4-6 weeks.

Post-surgery, some swelling, bruising, and soreness is expected, but will lessen each day as your body heals. You’ll wear a supportive surgical bra for several weeks for support and comfort and attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon to confirm everything is healing as intended. We provide each patient with detailed, personalized recovery instructions so you feel confident and recover beautifully. And of course, our team is always available to answer any questions along the way.

Will a breast reduction with lift leave scars?

Yes, there will be scars, but they are thoughtfully placed to be in inconspicuous locations. Common incision patterns, such as the anchor or lollipop, are designed to blend into the natural contours of your breasts as much as possible.

Following all recovery guidelines will prevent unnecessary swelling or tension along the healing incisions, which can worsen scarring. Proper scar care, including avoiding sun exposure and using silicone gels or sheets, typically helps scars fade to thin, light lines over time. Most patients find that the benefits of the surgery far outweigh concerns about scarring.

How long will the results of a breast reduction with lift last?

The results are long-lasting, but factors like aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and lifestyle choices can affect your breasts. That said, breast surgery results are usually quite resilient and can still maintain a pleasing look and feel even as your body continues to change with time. We support our patients’ breast reduction with lift results by recommending they maintain a stable weight, wear supportive bras, and practice healthy habits.

Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Some patients can breastfeed after this surgery, but it’s not guaranteed. The extent to which milk ducts and glands are preserved depends on the surgical technique used. If breastfeeding is a priority for you, let your surgeon know during your consultation so they can tailor the procedure accordingly to try and preserve your ability to breastfeed.

Does insurance cover a breast reduction with lift?

Insurance may cover the breast reduction portion of the surgery if it’s deemed medically necessary to address physical symptoms like back pain or rashes. However, the lift component of the surgery is typically considered cosmetic and may not be covered. We recommend that patients call their insurance agency directly to understand what their policy covers and what steps they should take to have part of the procedure covered or be reimbursed for a portion of the cost.

We do also have financing options available to help make paying for your procedure as convenient and seamless as possible.

How do I choose the best surgeon for a breast reduction with lift?

Choosing the right surgeon is key to achieving safe results you are happy with. Look for a cosmetic surgeon with extensive experience in combined breast procedures. During your consultation, ask about their surgical techniques, review their before-and-after photos, and ensure they understand your goals.

A skilled surgeon will prioritize your safety, listen to your concerns, and create a personalized plan tailored to your needs.
