Is 40 too young for a facelift?

One of the most common questions patients ask Lafayette facelift surgeon Dr. J. Kevin Duplechain is whether they are the “right age” for a facelift. The answer is unique to each patient, but there are some advantages to getting a facelift earlier in life. Read on to learn when to consider a facelift and why many patients benefit from surgery sooner than later.

Is there a “perfect age” for a facelift?

I think the perfect age for a facelift is when you feel ready. Whether you are in your 40s or your 80s, when you begin to see signs of aging that concern you, that is the right time for you to consider facial rejuvenation.

Of course, there are several less invasive treatments we offer at my Lafayette cosmetic surgery center that you might consider trying first, such as laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and medical-grade skincare. However, I often perform facelifts on younger people who wish to treat existing signs of aging and delay more significant concerns much sooner in the natural aging process.

Opting to undergo a facelift in your 40s can help you look and feel your best during the most active years of your life.

Why consider a facelift in your 40s?

If you’re 45 at the time of your facelift, for example, you may not have to think about additional procedures until you’re around 60. This is primarily because skin has more elasticity when you’re younger and your skin concerns are less severe. Starting in your early 30s, your body gradually produces less collagen and elastin (the proteins that give your skin a firm, plump, and youthful appearance). This is an important factor for many patients who choose to get a facelift earlier rather than later.

Additionally, many patients want to look great while they’re more active socially. For example, patients who’ve had children a bit later in life may still be relatively young, yet feel like they are the oldest parents at school meetings or on the sidelines at the soccer game. Opting to undergo a facelift in their 40s, when skin elasticity is still favorable, will more easily give them the results that they’re looking for and help them look and feel their best during the most active years of their lives.

80 may be too late, so don’t wait

I certainly think that people enjoy their facelifts more in their 40s, 50s, or 60s than they do when they’re 80. Oftentimes, by the time you get to 80, you may have some medical problems, or the skin changes that have occurred as you’ve aged are more difficult to repair or restore—even with a surgical facelift procedure.

If you are younger at the time of your facelift, the surgery will more easily give you the results you want, and the recovery tends to be much quicker.
